Description

In the 1990s, biologists found a wide range of rare fungi and lichens in Mossberga-Vipetorp. The discovery led to the creation of a nature reserve to protect valuable broadleaf forests, open and wooded pastures and marshes. The varied nature, plus the fact that the soil is rich in limestone, paves the way for extraordinary diversity.

No virgin land

For several centuries, farmers from Vipetorp, Mossberga and Högsrum had their hay meadows and grazing animals here. The landscape was then more open. In the 20th century, forests grew up on the land that was no longer farmed. In these forests, there are here and there old oak and hazel trees with rough trunks. They are reminiscent of the era when hay meadows and pastures spread out around the villages.

A brighter forest

Nowadays, grazing animals are once again grazing in large parts of the reserve. The aim is to create a forest with larger, open areas and glades. The sun-warmed environments are valuable for many of the reserve's rare fungi. And for the old oaks, which do not thrive when it gets too shady. Hawthorn and other flowering shrubs thrive in the margins of the glades, which are valuable restaurants for insects in search of pollen and nectar.

Fungal habitat of distinction

Mossberga-Vipetorp is one of Öland's most important areas for endangered soil fungi. What many of the fungi have in common is that they only thrive on calcareous soil. Some grow only on oak and other deciduous trees and hazel, with which the fungi have an intimate relationship. Most of the fungi are found underground in the form of thin threads - mycelium - which are connected to the roots of the trees. The mycelium supplies the roots with nutrients and in exchange the fungus receives carbohydrates. The fruiting body that the fungus shoots above ground, the part we see, is short-lived. But underground, the mycelium can live on for decades!
