Description
Here you walk through forests that are hundreds of years old. An ancient castle and the foundations of old houses tell of people who lived and worked here. But that was a long time ago. Now there are plants and animals that call the wild forest home. Perhaps you will see one of the inhabitants of the ancient forest on your walk through the nature reserve!
Long-time pensioners
The oldest oaks in the nature reserve can be as old as 600 years! No wonder they are overgrown and decaying. Fungi and various bugs that have lived in the oaks over the years have accelerated the ageing of the trees. Did you know that a hollow tree is more resistant to storms than a compact tree? If you want to see these giant trees, they can be found along Marströmmen in the eastern part of the nature reserve.
Old growth forest species
A number of unusual fungi, lichens and mosses associated with old-growth forests live in the nature reserve. The cauliflower fungus grows at the base of very old pines. Yellow-spotted lichen, yellow drop lichen and old oak lichen grow on the cracked, rough bark of large oaks. Trap moss, coarse feather moss and bladderwort all indicate forests with high natural values.
Valuable waters
The nature reserve's lakes and watercourses also have high natural values. In Stora Ramm, which is as much as 31 meters deep, several so-called glacial relicts live. One of them is the lake cricket, which has been found in only about 20 lakes in the country. Glacial relicts are species that lived in the sea that covered parts of Sweden during the melting of the ice sheet. When the sea retreated, these animals remained, especially in cold and deep lakes.
Tracks in the landscape
Despite the wild nature, there are traces here and there that bear witness to the area's former inhabitants. The oldest known remains are an ancient castle. The castle is perched on a cliff and from here you have a fantastic view of the lake and miles of forest. Other remains include a milestone and the foundations of old crofts. The remains are located along paths and roads, so it is easy to make some "historical" stops!
