Description

Marsjö sjömarker is one of several nature reserves in Södviken and Vässby fjärd. Here are some of Öland's most beautiful and valuable seashore meadows. The bird life is rich and recognized far beyond the borders of Öland.

Bird site of international rank

The wetlands in this area are part of Ramsar, a global network of valuable wetlands. Large numbers of waders and geese rest here in spring and fall. Breeding birds include lapwings, oystercatchers, redshanks and greater sandpipers.

Characterized by grazing

Cows, sheep and horses have been grazing on the island's lakes since the Iron Age. Grazing has shaped nature and tamed the vegetation. Without grazing animals, the coastal meadows would become overgrown with tall grasses, shrubs and bushes. Such a development would be devastating for the area's rich bird and plant life.

Place for many flowers

Lakeside meadows are home to many plants that are only found on land that has been grazed for a long time. For example, plants that need a lot of light or whose seeds prefer to grow in trampled, bare ground. The varying soil conditions - from limestone-rich to limestone-poor, from wet to dry - also contribute to the richness of the flowers. Coastal meadows grow coastal arum and mayweed. The orchid honeyflower thrives in calcareous meadows a little inland. On the other hand, baking thyme and shamrock like it dry!

Cultural trails

In the western parts of the nature reserve there are plenty of stone walls and paths. They were built in the 1800s when the pasture was divided between the villagers. The walls marked the new property boundaries.
