Kvarntorpet, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Kalmar län och Öland
Actions
Description
Kvarntorpet is a fine example of typical Tjustlandet - a mosaic landscape with coniferous forest-clad hills separated by pastures and fields with oak groves. In the varied nature there is a rich plant and animal life.
Barren rocky areas
Up on the mountain ridges in the north, rocky pine forests spread out. Some of the pines growing here are over 200 years old. There are also plenty of dead trees. In parts of the outcrop, prescribed burning is part of the management of the reserve. Burning creates sun-exposed pine environments with fire-killed trees that attract many insects, which in turn become food for various bird species.
Hedgerows
In recent years, the land below the mountain ridges has been restored from forest to wooded pastures. The grazed pastures are rich in vegetation, especially east of the farm. For example, little bluebells, cowslips, maidenhair fern, night violet, white wood lily and sedge grow here.
Grazed forest
Old pastures, where forest now grows, are also grazed. In the grazed forest, the trees are sparser and there are plenty of clearings. The flora is somewhat richer here compared with the more closed forest. Examples of plants in the grazed forest are cowslip and spring savory.
Traces of ancient seas
In the northern part of the reserve rises a 55 meter high dome-like height. When the sea level was higher than today, the waves reached the top of the dome and washed away pebbles, gravel, sand and mud. What remained were larger stones of roughly the same size, a so-called stone square.
