Description

Knästorp offers both natural and cultural experiences. From the parking lot you walk through magical forest. Listen for birdsong and look for lichens in the bark of old tree trunks. Follow the path and you will reach Knästorp's old village site. Here you can let your imagination run wild among the remains of houses hidden under bushes and thickets.

Village with a dramatic history

"All roads lead to Rome". Or in this case, all paths lead to Knästorp's old village site! The path into the nature reserve follows the old church path to Hagelsrum, more recently called Postvägen. It is now more than a hundred years since anyone lived in the village but remains of houses and other things are still there. According to old tales, the village was destroyed at the end of the 19th century because all the farmers in the village drank themselves to death. That all the farmers in the village would have drunk themselves to death is hardly true. The village was indeed destroyed, but the reason was that the majority of the farmers emigrated.

Species-rich forest

In the hillside east of the village, broadleaf forest grows on former meadows and fields. A number of unusual lichens grow on old trees in the forest, such as elm lichen, pale crater lichen and lung lichen. The forest is also home to a variety of birds. If you're lucky, you might see or hear a nuthatch, a lesser spotted woodpecker or a robin!

Beyond the trails

The forest in the north-eastern part of the western half of the reserve is of a different character. Here, conifers dominate and the ground is covered with thick mats of moss. The trunks of old spruces are colored in light gray by old spruce lichen and the branches are draped with various hanging lichens. Discerning species such as stump moss, wood staircase moss and small horned moss grow on fallen trunks, and interesting soil fungi such as breadfruit and coral finger fungi can appear in the moss mats.
