Mörbylånga - Öland
Welcome to the world heritage of southern Öland!
This nature reserve protects the westernmost part of Jordtorpsåsen - a popular destination that offers varied nature and an exciting cultural history. In early summer, the dry meadows and marshes are in full bloom and an intense chorus of small birds sounds from the hazel and juniper bushes. Up on the mighty ridge there are several interesting ancient remains.
Jordtorpsåsen has been of great importance to people since prehistoric times, as a burial site, a communication route and probably also as grazing and haymaking land. The entire ridge is a coherent area of ancient remains. The reserve includes two burial grounds from the Iron Age and a hollow way formed by thousands of years of trampling by humans and animals.
The nature in the reserve alternates between dry meadow, wetland and hazel-rich forest. The light-open, sandy dry meadow on the crest of the ridge and the mosaic it forms with other habitats make the area a hot spot for biodiversity. The list of exciting and rare species is long and covers many different groups of organisms.
Characteristic plants of the dry meadow include field bindweed, briar, thyme and sundew. Several species of wild bees build their nests in the sandy soil, including the fibble sand bee and the blood sand bee. The dry meadow is also an excellent habitat for beetles, butterflies and fungi. Moonhorn beetle, field bindweed and small disk fungus are just a few examples from the list of rarities found in the area.
Below the ridge, wet meadows, marshes and heaths spread out. These environments are also home to a rich plant and animal life. Long-legged frogs, field frogs and great crested newts spawn in the shallow water bodies in early spring. Turnips, meadow lilies and wild flowers thrive in the wetlands.
