Description

Old, rough trees stretch proudly towards the sky. Dead, fallen trunks slowly but surely decay in the eternal cycle of nature. Thick layers of mosses and lichens rest over rocks and stones. Welcome to an unusual forest where time stands still!

Natural forest

The forest in the nature reserve used to belong to Hultserum village. Here the villagers collected firewood, timber and wood, and animals probably grazed here. But now the forest has been untouched for a long time and there are few traces of human activity. The trees are of different ages, many are really old and there are plenty of dead trees, both standing and fallen. This type of forest is called natural forest. Natural forests are rare in today's modern forest landscape.

Dead wood is alive

Dead wood is in short supply today and many organisms that depend on decaying wood for their survival are on the brink of extinction. A variety of insects, fungi, mosses and lichens are therefore queuing up to settle in and on the reserve's old and dead trees. This is the case, for example, with the rare relict beetle, which lays its eggs in sunlit old pines.

Bearded spruces

Long, hanging lichens drape many of the forest's late-growing giants. Lichen experts can spot rarities such as the pale greenish-yellow yarn lichen and the chestnut-brown species pine thorn. The hanging lichens are valuable in their own right but are also used as nesting material by many birds.
