Description
Since the Middle Ages, farmers from Lilla and Stora Gryssebo have farmed these lands. The Stora Gryssebo farm was abandoned in the 1960s, but the foundations of houses and cellars can still be seen today. Today, the area is a haven for many unusual species, which thrive in the varied nature.
Village from the Middle Ages
The first farmers settled here at Gryssebo in the late 1400s. For several centuries, the villages of Lilla and Stora Gryssebo were surrounded by fields, meadows and pastures. Perhaps they also farmed on drained land by the drained Grytsjön lake. The farming era on the Stora Gryssebo farm ended in the 1960s. However, traces in the form of well-preserved cairns and stone walls still remain, reminding us of the history of the land.
Room for many
The nature reserve is a mosaic of old deciduous and coniferous forests, wetlands and open grasslands. This makes for a rich plant and animal life. Woodpeckers, woodland fungi and lichens associated with old deciduous trees thrive in the forest. The flower-rich roadsides and old farmland attract colorful butterflies and other insects.
Colorful quartet
Examples of butterflies you may see in the reserve in summer are the meadow metalwing, the six-spotted swallowtail, the broad-browed swallowtail and the lesser swallowtail. They are all part of the mongrel swarmers, a group of butterflies in which all seven Swedish species have declined as meadows and pastures have disappeared.
