Description

This nature reserve protects lush mixed forests, teeming wetlands and a stretch of the beautiful Alsterån river. The area is part of the Hornsö Ecopark, well known for its wealth of wood-dwelling insects.

Old deciduous trees and decaying wood

The nature reserve's forests consist of deciduous and mixed forests with a lot of beech, but also oak, lime, maple, birch and aspen. Many beech trees are old and coarse and up to 250 years old. There are also large giant oaks and fallen oak trunks in the beach forest at Hundströmmen. The old trees are an important reason why so many rare insects have been found in the area. Many lichens, mosses and fungi also depend on the old trees.

Insect Eldorado

Hornsö Ecopark is one of Western Europe's most important areas for the conservation of endangered insects. The species diversity is unique, with around 700 known species of wood-dwelling beetles. The green aspen beetle, dark-legged comb beetle, blunt-toothed leaf-cutter and orange-spotted brown beetle are examples of rare beetles found in Getebro. The reserve is also home to many unusual butterfly species.

Sanka meadows

The Alsterån river is bordered by marshy meadows, known as mader. In the past, farmers mowed these lush fields to get hay for their cattle. Four of the reserve's mader are still mown today. The aim is to benefit the plants that thrive in the open, wet fields. But also to preserve the historical landscape.
