Forsby, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Kalmar län och Öland
Actions
Description
Forsby nature reserve is divided into three areas of valuable forest. Conifers dominate, but there are also deciduous and swamp forests of various kinds. A wide range of rare plants and animals live in the forests.
Home to many species
Species that need old-growth forests with dead wood are increasingly disappearing. It is the lack of their habitats that makes them struggle in rationally managed woodlands. But in this nature reserve they have a haven. The wood stair moss, stump moss and long-lobed moss thrive on fallen spruces with decaying wood. On the rough bark of coarse oaks, yellow-powdered nail lichen and brown needle lichen protrude their millimeter-long fruiting bodies that sit on stems.
Plants of the forest
The reserve's soil is rich in moss and groves typical of the forest, such as wood anemone, fern and spring pea. Where it is damp, you may come across the small, peculiar goldenrod. The inconspicuous orchid knotweed grows in the reserve's older spruce forests. All these plants are signal species indicating forest worthy of protection.
Populated in the past
There are several ancient remains in Forsby. The oldest are probably from the early Iron Age (500 years before our era - 550 years after our era). In the central area there are two burial grounds. The southern field consists of ten stone circles and the northern field consists of 18 mounds, four doom rings and two stone circles. Significantly younger remains, in the form of an old pit and an overgrown warp pile, can also be seen during your visit.
