Djursnäs Kase, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Kalmar län och Öland
Actions
Description
From the Djursnäs kase mountain, you have a magnificent view of the Syrsan bay. On the way up to the top, you pass lush groves, coniferous forests with deciduous trees and rocky pine forests. If you are really lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the unusual hazel snake!
Dramatic nature
When the nature reserve was established in 1974, it was to "maintain a beautiful and distinctive feature in the landscape". And indeed, Djursnäs case is striking, with high mountains and cliffs in the west. For those who want to experience the beautiful nature, there is a path that is steep and difficult to access at times. When you reach the top of the mountain, you can look out over the bays Syrsan and Porsviken.
Changing nature
Pine forests grow in the rocky areas and lichen mats spread out on the ground. When you leave the barren land, the pine is joined by spruce and deciduous trees such as aspen and birch. On the slopes and below the mountain, deciduous trees become increasingly common and create small groves together with hazel and other shrubs. Here and there are late-growing, large oaks.
Fields and cairns
Up on the mountain there is a large shingle field. The stones of the field were brought here by the ice sheet and then waves on ancient seas have ground them round. Some stones have been moved by human hands. The people who lived here in the Bronze Age probably collected stones from the field for their burial cairns. There are four cairns on the top of the mountain.
