Description
Bårby borg is located on top of the castle, just south of the village of Bårby. Thanks to its location, the inhabitants had a fantastic view of Kalmarsund and were able to spot any enemy ships early on. The castle is the only ancient castle on Öland that uses the natural and steep land castle in its defense. The castle is shaped like a horseshoe and the settlement may have resembled terraced housing, with houses side by side outside the wall. In the eastern part of the rampart there are remains of the collapsed medieval gate, which was built with lime mortar.
The archaeological finds show that the castle was inhabited both during the Migration Period/Ventile Age and the Middle Ages, just like Gråborg, Eketorps borg and Triberga borg. The oldest and most famous find is a Byzantine gold coin minted for Emperor Justinus, 518-527 AD. Other finds include earthenware vessels, knives, combs and costume buckles.
Just south of the castle is Rösslösa galgbacke, which is Öland's highest point, 57.4 m above sea level.
