Åby sandbackar, Naturreservat

Description

At first glance, the Åby sandy slopes look like any other island pasture. But this is a rare piece of nature - the open sandy areas are home to a large number of rare and endangered plants and animals.

Valuable grazing

For several hundred years, Åby sand hills have been characterized by grazing and farming. Exposed sand has been continuously created, which has favored an exclusive flora of sandy soil plants. Plants such as tufted saxifrage, sand fescue and groundsel can therefore be regarded as a piece of living cultural history.

Rare fungi and insects

The reserve is home to Europe's largest known population of the steppe ground star. The rarities also include its relative the dwarf ground star. Earthstars are smoky mushrooms, which you may be lucky enough to see in late summer and fall. The sandy pasture is also home to a wide variety of insects. For example, there are plenty of bees and stinging insects living in sandy patches created by the animals' footsteps. The reserve is also home to a number of rare dung beetles.

Restoration of sandy habitats

Sunlit, bare sand is in short supply in today's landscape and many sand-dwelling animals and plants have therefore become very rare. To restore exposed sand, several management measures will be implemented in the reserve.

The plants and animals that live in Åby sand hills may be rare, but they need disturbance on the ground! You don't need to be afraid to walk on the ground - quite the opposite!
