Description

Romanäs is best known for its former sanatorium, located on a southern slope just outside the reserve. During the first half of the 20th century, patients with tuberculosis - one of the most serious diseases of the time with a very high mortality rate - were treated in the large facility. The location on the southern slope surrounded by pine forest was chosen with care. Warmth and fresh air, preferably sea air or air filtered through conifers, was the prescription for tuberculosis at the time. Romanäs Sanatorium was built in 1906-1907 on the initiative of teacher Julia von Bahr. The buildings were designed by Carl Westman. The sanatorium had room for about fifty patients - one of the most famous was the poet and artist Harriet Löwenhjelm.
