Description
The artist Pål Svensson is represented with about 40 works of art around Sweden, Denmark and the USA.
The sculpture ‘Stigande Spiral’ (Rising Spiral) has been polished so it shines, which means that it captures changes in the environment, constantly changing character and expression. An exciting effect of this is that the horizontal surroundings become vertical in the reflection. The artist exploits the twisted shape so that the 250-centimetre-high sculpture appears to tilt from certain visible angles.
The block comes from the Värnamo and Hjortsjö quarry, one of the first places in Sweden where black granite was quarried. Its shape links the donors to the ‘circulation spiral’ and to their father, who founded the newspaper Värnamo Nyheter. ‘Stigande Spiral’, which is located in the Flanaden square opposite the newspaper’s former premises, was donated by the siblings and the newspaper’s former owners – Sonia Wänestig and editor-in-chief Karl-Erik Johansson – in memory of their father K.W. Johansson, who founded Värnamo Nyheter in 1930.
