Description

Goro Suzuki (born
1941) is a Japanese potter who works in many different styles, all grounded in
Japanese tradition. One of those styles is Oribe ware, which originated in his
home region of Mino in the 17th century. It is a stylised design based on
imaginative combinations of squares, rectangles and circles. Sometimes he adds
accents of green glaze. Goro Suzuki is a major artist in Japan, but he has also
held a number of exhibitions and had public works hosted abroad, such as in the
US and Germany.

He started pottery as
a teenager, practising night and day to make 1000 teacups. Only then, he said,
could he call himself a craftsman. It took three years.

The artwork Red –
Black is made of black polished diabase and red granite.
