Description

The colourful tin ‘Marknadsgycklare’ (Market jesters) light up Kyrktorget square. They were purchased at the same time as ‘Marknadsbilder’. In the 1920s, Bror Marklund became an ornamental sculptor in Stockholm and then a student of Carl Milles and Nils Sjögren. He studied at the Royal Institute of Art, where he was admitted in 1928 having submitted a number of works in wood. During the 1930s he travelled to Italy and France on a scholarship and spent his time drawing. There, Modernism had progressed considerably further than in Sweden and he was influenced by Henri Laurens, Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore, among others. His art has been described as eroticist primitivism. He himself said: “Making a beautiful thing; I never got around to that.” During his career he received numerous awards and grants.

He was a sculptor who preferred to model figures in motion and at rest, and his three main motifs were the jester, mother and child, and figure in a storm. Purchased by the Municipality of Värnamo in 1970.
