Artwork: Marknadsbilder

Kyrktorget square in
Värnamo is entirely decorated by the works of sculptor Bror Marklund. The
artworks ‘Marknadsbilder’ (Market pictures) and ‘Marknadsgycklare’ (Market
jesters) were purchased at the same time, and four years later they were
completed with the sculpture collection ‘Mäster Olof’ (Master Olof).

The sculpture
collection ‘Marknadsbilder’ stirred up emotions among the people of Värnamo.
Not least the pregnant woman from the collection ‘Marknadsbilder’. In Carl
Snoilsky’s famous poem about the lovers Per and Kersti, who met at the Värnamo
market, there was no suggestion that Kersti was pregnant. However, the female
figure among the sculptures is officially unknown.

The sculpture of a
pig also upset people, who claimed that only sick pigs sit as Bror Marklund’s
pig does. Nowadays, the pig is much loved and shiny from all the pats it gets.
Purchased by the Municipality of Värnamo in 1970.
