Description

Hånger’s old cemetery, reopened in 2004, is a very interesting place. People have buried their ancestors here since the 11th century. There has also been a stave church from about the same time, the last of which was demolished in 1882. The cemetery existed long before Hånger village, and it is believed that people from the old settlements around Vidöstern have been laid to rest here.

Thanks to interested people then and now, some objects were rescued and sent off to the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm and to the County Administrative Board in Jönköping. The objects included a crucifix and a church sturgeon that were returned to Hånger and are now in the new church. There is also a very old christening font in the church. Between the stave church and the current one, there was another church that burnt down.
