Description
“Courtship avenue” If you look towards the Apladalen park, you will see the “Courtship Avenue” or Tånnögatan as it is called. This is where lovesick young people walked hand in hand beneath the leafy sycamores. Tånnögatan was the old southern approach to central Värnamo.
Old courthouse The old courthouse for all of the Finnveden district was located at the square Gästisplan. It burned down in 1835, and the red wooden building became the new courthouse for Västbo and Östbo hundreds. Inmates had to go down to the cellar through a metal trapdoor in the floor. It is said that several people who were locked in there were “forgotten”. Outside the courthouse was a pillory where severe punishments were administered. Offenders could be sentenced to public flagellation with a whip or rod.

Facts
This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.
The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
