Description
A very nice church ruin with many nooks and crannies to explore, surrounded by meadows, the Great Lake and fields.
According to tradition, Sunne church and castle were built in 1178 on the orders of the Norwegian king, Sverre Sigurdsson, who defeated the Jämtland peasant army on the ice of Lake Storsjön in the battle of Andersön in the spring winter. Sunne Kastal was damaged in a lightning strike in 1731. Kastalen was a defense tower. There have been two of these in Jämtland. The other is completely preserved and is located at Brunflo church.
The old church was built of limestone and granite. The doorway was in the south wall and the windows were round-arched. Inside, the walls were covered with lime paintings. Among other things, there is said to have been a scene depicting Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.
