Description
Kyrkås old church is one of Jämtland's smallest with only 70 pews. The roof trusses in the nave have been dated to 1545. Around the church are several buildings from the early 1800s, one of which is now a homestead. The area is very beautiful with pastures and forest around.
In 1845, the new church was consecrated, which had already been put into use two years earlier. The old church was abandoned and in 1844 the bell tower, the courtyard wall and several of the church's furnishings were sold at auction. The font, pulpit, altarpiece with altarpiece and click were saved and stored in the new church.
In 1906, restoration work began on the deserted church, which for a time had been used as a sheepfold. With the help of donations and voluntary work from members of the local history society and other parishioners, extensive restoration work was completed. After the pulpit and other parts of the old interior had been reinstalled in the church and a new bell tower erected according to the old model, the church was reopened on July 5, 1959.
