Description
The river Nissan has its source in the Småland highlands, just southwest of Taberg in a bog aptly named Nissakälla. There are several different explanations for the river's name, including that it was called Niz during the Old Swedish period, which is believed to derive from the Latin verb nitere, meaning to shine. There is also a theory that it comes from the word nidh or nidwa, which refers to the dark-colored moss water of the Nissan. At 186 km, the Nissan is one of southern Sweden's longest rivers. The famous Halmstad salmon was caught and exported here back in the 17th century.
