Description

At the far end of the Ölmanäs peninsula is the Näsbokrok nature reserve. Sea and wind have shaped a barren but beautiful landscape with shingle fields, cliffs and extensive heathland. Here there is a walking-friendly trail where even those who find it difficult to walk, or who want to bring a pram, can easily get around.

The trail is 1.4 kilometers long and for those who need to stop and rest their legs or sit down and have a cup of coffee, there are several possible resting places along the way. An accessible toilet is located at the parking lot and the parking lot also has accessible tables and toilets.

A sturdy boardwalk leads visitors over the more rugged sections, in a couple of places there are particularly wide passages where two wheelchairs can meet. When the footbridge ends, a wide gravel path continues towards the western part of the reserve.

The accessible trail only touches a small part of the reserve. For those who prefer to move around more freely, there is a longer and less formalized loop that leads to the more secluded shingle fields in the south.

Collect stamps

In some of our most popular reserves, you can also collect a nice stamp when you visit the reserve. You stamp either directly in your guidebook or on your own paper/book. In Näsbokrok, the stamp can be found at the sign about the Bronze Age cairns along the yellow trail.

Carnivorous species

The sea, the wind and above all the ice sheet have sculpted the landscape throughout history. Today, it is grazing cattle and traditional heather burning that preserve the area's typical heather moorland. But there are more exciting species than heather to discover in Näsbokrok. There is already reason to linger at a small marsh just inside the gate at the parking lot. Here, the shallower parts of the marsh are becoming overgrown with various species of sedge, but in the deeper parts you will find the common heather, whose pale pink or white flowers rise in June-August in a flock-like wreath over the leaf rosette. In some years, the bright yellow southern bluebell also flowers here, its finely lobed leaves concealing blisters that trap and suck out insects and other small organisms. The southern bluebell is thus one of the few "carnivorous" species we have in the country.

Edible plants

If you go out onto the shingle fields, you can find two edible plants, namely beach cabbage and scurvy. In the past, sailors ate scurvy herb to counteract the deficiency disease scurvy during long voyages. The herb is rich in vitamin C. Those interested in botany should also take the time to search for oysterwort, which had its only known location in Halland, but it does not seem to be left at present. Please contact us if you find it!

Old landmarks from the Bronze Age

In Näsbokrok, eight monumental Bronze Age cairns rise above the surroundings. They were built to be visible from the sea, which was the import route for the important bronze and other trade goods of the time. The cairns offer an impressive view of the sea and Kungsbackafjorden. It is particularly powerful to stand here when the autumn storms blow and the wave foam is whipped high above the rocks.

There are also several Bronze Age burial cairns in the reserve. These burial cairns are dated to the period 1500-500 BC. It is not permitted to climb on the burial mounds in the reserve.

Possibility to watch birds

The reserve is home to the woodlark, which is similar in appearance to the skylark but has a much shorter tail. Other characteristic birds are the yellowhammer, the gray warbler, the whitethroat and the pea warbler. Along the rocky coast, waders such as greater sandpipers, redshanks and oystercatchers can be seen, and out on the Sälön reef, cormorants stand like black crosses with outstretched wings. Brown harriers often hunt over the reed beds in Rörkällemosse and among the junipers and willows in the inner parts of the reserve, the miniature birds of the bird world, kingfisher and wagtail, can be seen.
