Description
Nature along the Nissan
The most distinctive feature of the Nissan is its meandering course. This is a slow geological process called meandering, which constantly changes the river and its environment. For the most part, the Nissan is calm. In some places, mainly in the northern parts of the municipality, the river's calm and winding course is interrupted by slightly more flowing sections and there you can still fish "Nissaöring". The Nissan offers many fine spots for both angling, spinning and fly fishing. The natural environment along the Nissan is rich in wildlife and vegetation. Here you can meet wildlife such as deer and moose grazing along the river.
You pass several fascinating nature reserves along the Nissan, such as the primeval hill Isaberg and the nature reserves Värö, Ettö and Villstad church village.
Cultural history along the Nissan
For almost 200 years, timber floating on the Nissan played a major role in the forest industry. Channels were used to guide the timber past various obstacles along the way. At the waterfall in Gislaved, you can see one such log flume. Here you can also take a break and visit the Gislaved Industrial Museum, which offers toilets and water refills to all canoe guests.
From the Middle Ages onwards, water power from the Nissan was used to run the mills along the river. In Skeppshult you can visit Bölaryd's museum mill. It is today the only mill that can be operated along the Nissan in Jönköping County. A stone's throw from Nissan you will also find one of Småland's most magnificent domarring grave fields from the early Iron Age.
Combine canoeing with hiking
Combine canoeing with hiking on the Gislavedsleden trail. For example, you can paddle from Öreryd or Isaberg to Gislaved and then hike back to Isaberg via the Gislaved Trail.
Resting places
There are eight rest areas along the Nissan: Alabo, Algustorpasjön, Båraryds By, Bäckshult, Rönnegården, Skeppshult, Ågård, Öreryd. Each rest area provides a shelter, wood storage, barbecue area, waste bin and toilet. To use the rest areas along the trail, a canoe check is required. This canoe voucher can be purchased at selected sales points along the Nissan. The canoe check must be placed in the mailbox when you arrive at the rest area.
Canoe rental
If you don't have your own canoe, you can rent one at Isaberg Mountin Resort, Hestra Guesthouse or at Hörsjöns camping in Smålandsstenar. You can rent a canoe and equipment at one location and leave it at your destination. The rental companies offer canoe transportation to/from the start or finish location. This service gives you the freedom to choose the route that suits you best.
