Description
The Sankt Olofsleden is a pilgrimage trail along medieval roads from coast to coast between Visby and Sankt Olofsholm. The pilgrimage trail is marked with the common “Olavskorset”, which is used internationally by Olavsleder. Between the seven medieval churches, the trail winds for almost 60 km over moorland, through forest and along roadsides, in a scenic landscape that changes with the seasons. Here are lands that people have farmed, a living cultural heritage and places where pilgrims worshipped God.
Legend has it that in 1029 the Christian King Olav of Norway landed at Sankt Olofsholm, formerly known as Akergarn. In the 13th century the cult of Saint Olav spread across northern Europe and the small prayer house at Sankt Olofsholm was replaced by a large chapel, a holy place where many people went to pray and make offerings.
The trail is maintained by the Church of Sweden Visby Diocese
