Description

The maidenhair caterpillar is hard to miss where it stands on the cliff edge. You almost need a magnifying glass to spot the endangered pennant moss.

Jungfrun Nature Reserve covers a 700 meter long section of the steep coastal cliff northwest of Lickershamn. In this section there are two protruding cliff sections, Stuklint in the west and Jungfruklint with the rauk Jungfrun in the east. The cliff reaches its highest height, 27 meters above sea level, at Stuklint. The rauk Jungfrun is Gotland's highest rauk. Its top reaches 12 meters above the plateau it stands on and 26 meters above sea level. According to legend, the rauk is named after a tragic love affair that took place here at Lickershamn almost 1000 years ago.

Inside the cliff grows an old, pine-dominated limestone coniferous forest with elements of spruce: and in places rich occurrences of dead wood. The forest provides a favorable habitat for rare lichens, mosses and insects.

The cliff coast within the reserve is known by moss experts for its occurrences of the extremely rare and only a few millimeters in size pennant moss, but also forsmossa and brook lance moss have been found in the area. All three species grow next to calcareous watercourses or in floodplains and are dependent on undisturbed hydrology.
