Description
The Grötlingboholme nature reserve offers exciting bird experiences at all times of the year. In spring and fall, large numbers of barnacle geese and many different species of waders rest here. All year round you can see birds of prey such as white-tailed eagles, golden eagles and peregrine falcons hunting in the area.
The reserve includes the 50-hectare island of Grötlingboholme (Innerholmen) with the surrounding water area, and the outermost part of Grötlingboudd including the small islands of Karkskär and Ajkstskär.
Grötlingboudd and Grötlingboholme are home to a rich bird life for much of the year. Ducks such as shoveler and pintail, waders such as curlew, lapwing, redshank, avocet and dunlin, as well as several species of tern, nest here. In spring and autumn, large numbers of migratory ducks and waders rest in the area, and especially in April and the first half of May, thousands of barnacle geese can be seen grazing on the meadows.
To enable visitors to study the area's bird life without disturbing the birds, the County Administrative Board has set up an observation site with a shelter in the form of a long "plank" with viewing windows. The hide is located about 150 meters outside the western boundary of the reserve, and a marked path leads out to the hide. This path may also be used during the time of year (March 15 - July 15 and October 1 - November 15) when it is otherwise forbidden to enter the area.
