Description

Around Gotland you can see wind and water mills, more or less preserved. The watermill in Boge is used for grinding by the local community association a few times a year. Then you can hear the slamming and feel the dust from when the flour is ground with water power and millstones.

When the mill is still and the gears, booms and shafts are at rest, it is a peaceful environment here at Aner in Boge. The mill's activity is, however, reminded by the white flour dust that covers the interior. Can you imagine the mill in full activity with water flowing and the deafening sound of the millstones, the large gears, the booms and the shafts spinning and moving?

Water and windmills have existed on Gotland since the Middle Ages. Since the farms were self-sufficient, they were found on every other farm. Later, when the marshes were drained and the water disappeared, many watermills could no longer be used. Now most of them have fallen into disrepair or even disappeared.

The mill at Aner is one of those that has had a better fate and has been restored, and is one of two water mills still used for grinding on Gotland. The mill is one of several built at the end of the 19th century along the Anerån river. A wheel that is about six meters in diameter drives the mill. Inside are double pairs of millstones. The water flows towards the mill wheel from below, which was common on Gotland where the water flow was not so great.

The mill has two floors and is constructed in timber and bolt technique with reused parts from a previous mill building. All equipment is preserved. Inside, there is also a fireplace with reused finely carved stone details from an older building.
