Description
Lomtjärn nature reserve is one of the county's finest natural forests. Within the reserve there are several types of coniferous forest. The area is relatively unaffected by humans. The nature reserve is a perfect destination if you want to experience the coniferous forests of Norrland as they may have looked in the past. You can hike the trails that run through the area or look for unusual fungi and lichens. The forest and wetlands offer great nature experiences. Lomtjärn Nature Reserve is located 10 kilometers north of Brännås and covers 138 hectares.
There are several unusual species in the reserve. This is mainly because the trees have grown so old that many of them have died. A variety of fungi and lichens grow on the dead trees. For example, patchy tick, wrinkled skin, scented skin, rose tick, border tick and cream tick. The spruce forest also has a few shoots of the long bearded lichen. It is the world's longest lichen and can grow up to 10 meters.
Landscape and the wild chanterelle
In the western part of the area is the Storlomman wetland. There is also the small tarn Lomtjärnen, which is about one hectare in size. In parts of the nature reserve, the mixed conifer forest changes to pure spruce forest. For example, on the southern slope of Smörbackberget. Southwest of the Lomtjärn pond grows pure pine forest.
The forest has previously had several fires. The last major fire occurred at the end of the nineteenth century.
Within the reserve, the county's only discovery of the unusual mushroom strawberry chanterelle has been observed. The fungus has been found in a few places throughout the country. Among others in Uppland and Jämtland. It seems to be lime-dependent, which suggests nutrient-rich conditions in the area.
