Description
The Kyrkberget reserve has one of the most primeval forests in the county. At the top of the mountain, you can visit the cracked moving block called Gudsberg's monastery ruin. Or discover an ancient monument in the form of lying pine trunks with carvings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The forests, bird watching and ancient remains offer great nature and cultural experiences. Kyrkberget is located 10 kilometers south of Kårböle. It covers 36 hectares of woodland and 12 hectares of mire.
Spruce swamp forest with bogs and streams
The area consists of parts of Kyrkberget where the top forms the center of the reserve. The eastern side is partly a sharp slope, while the northern, western and southern slopes are flat. Below the slopes along the southern half of the mountain are open bogs.
The western and southern parts are characterized by a spruce swamp forest with marshes and streams. Östra Vallsbäcken also flows there.
The rest of the forest is dominated by spruce and coniferous mixed forest with deciduous elements. On the eastern slope, a spruce has been sampled and determined to be 310 years old. The forest there is probably older.
Popular excursion destination
On the top of Kyrkberget there is a moving block that has been blown apart by sun and cold, "Gudsbergs klosterruin". It is a popular destination for excursions. According to local oral tradition, a monastery belonging to the Bernardine Order was located here.
Adjacent to the formation are a number of pine logs carved with initials, tree marks and dates. These carvings are from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Natural values in Kyrkberget
Kyrkberget is one of the most primeval forest-like areas in the county and the forest is also one of the most species-rich. Most are linked to forests with long continuity and a stable humid climate. Many birds nest in Kyrkberget, and three-toed woodpeckers and grey woodpeckers have been observed.
The scented tick and wrinkled skin are fungi that also thrive here. The lichens pink shield lichen and hull lichen grow here. Mosses and vascular plants include, for example, stair moss and spiderwort.
