Description
The spruce forest in Klövberget nature reserve resembles a primeval forest with mainly spruce. When several storms passed by, many trees were felled and almost all of them in the part of the nature reserve located in Västernorrland County. Keep in mind that it can be dangerous to walk among storm-felled trees. Klövberget nature reserve is located 13 kilometers northwest of Hassela church village and covers 69 hectares, of which 46 hectares are in Gävleborg County.
The forest at Klövberget is not a primeval forest in the true sense. The steep and inaccessible parts of the area have been little affected by felling over the last 250 years. The 69-hectare area, located on the border between Gävleborg and Västernorrland counties, is also protected as a nature reserve.
Forest with lots of lichens and mosses
The southern part of the reserve is in Gävleborg County and the northern part in Västernorrland County. The forest is an almost pure spruce forest. It is uneven-aged, highly patchy and rich in lying and dead standing trees.
The nature reserve is rich in herbs and a total of 110 vascular plant species have taken root in the lush woodland.
In several places, there is lush fern or tall herb vegetation with, among other things, torta, marsh fritillary and black magic grape. Among mosses and lichens, there are several red-listed species and signal species. These include the long-bearded lichen, which has one of its largest populations in the country here.
Insects and birds
The insect fauna has not been investigated, but the reserve can be assumed to harbor a rich fauna with many species worthy of protection, both insects, arachnids and several groups of invertebrates. Of birds, capercaillie, bee hawk, lesser spotted woodpecker and robin have been noted.
