Description

Gulåsen is a great destination for nature lovers who enjoy spending time in old forest with thick moss mats and lichens hanging from the tree branches. The reserve consists of a small mountain and is one of the last remnants of old forest in the area. In Gulåsen you can walk freely in the forest because there are no trails in the area.

The area is located 6 kilometers northwest of Gnarp and covers 34 hectares. Most of the area consists of old moss-covered spruce forest. But in some parts there are plenty of both willow and aspen. At the top of the mountain there are lichen-covered rocky areas with large pines. The soil is thin, dry and nutrient-poor.

Unusual wood fungi

Old, dead and dying trees, as well as a large proportion of deciduous trees, create conditions for a rich diversity of plants and animals.

Due to the amount of deciduous trees, a number of unusual wood fungi and lichens thrive here. For example, the ventriloquist's lichen, the skin lichen, the lung lichen and the large aspen lichen. The presence of these species suggests that the area has had rough hardwoods for a long time.

Animals in Gulåsen

Many birds nest in Gulåsen. Owls and woodpeckers thrive here. The menu includes insects, larvae and other small animals as well as seeds.
