Björnberget, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Gävleborgs län
Actions
Description
The nature reserve is located on a slope that is in places very rocky. Burnt stumps indicate that the forest has burned. But you can also find fungi and rare lichens here. There are no paths in the area, so you can roam freely in the forest. Björnberget comprises a 33-hectare forest area with high natural values and is located about 12 kilometers west of Järvsö.
The area consists mainly of three key biotopes that extend over the top of Björnberget and over the east and west slopes. It consists of a grand-dominated coniferous forest with a noticeable deciduous element of mainly birch and aspen. The forest is multi-layered and clearly natural forest and has most likely been created after a fire at the end of the 19th century. The age of the stands is around 120 years, but pine stands of around 160-180 years occur scattered in the area.
Abundant dead wood
The forest has an unmanaged character and lacks traces of recent forestry measures, but older moss-covered felling stumps are present, as well as coarse dimensionally felled often charred pine stumps. There is plenty of dead wood in the forest, mainly in the form of spruce logs (dead lying trees) and dry spruce branches. Much of the dead wood has been formed in the last 10 years and several large gaps have formed in the forest.
Night violet, rose thistle and knotweed
Several findings of red-listed species and signal species that only occur in this type of older natural forest give the area high natural values. Examples of rare/endangered fungi are the wood-living species woolly adelgid and rose adelgid, which grow mainly on dead trees in this type of older spruce forest. Vascular plants such as knotweed and night violet also thrive in these moss-rich coniferous forests, along with lung lichen, coral lead lichen and stump lichen.
