Description

A small pine heath area with landforms from the Ice Age and 200-year-old pines. The forest was previously used for forestry but is now protected and part of an important recreational area. The pines are majestic and stand sparsely on the rolling dunes created by the wind when the ice melted some 10,000 years ago. Reindeer lichen spreads out on the ground like a white blanket. Here and there, you can find the less common flatwoods. Some pines have died and remain as dry trees while others have fallen and lie as flames. Dead wood is of great benefit to many of the forest's inhabitants. In recent times, much of the reserve has been cleared by wild boar.

Activities And Facilities

About 380 million years ago, a four-kilometer meteorite hit what is commonly known as the Siljan Ring. The site is the largest crater in Western Europe and a so-called "star year". It contains unique rocks that have been used by humans throughout history in agriculture, limestone mining and early industrialization. The area is also widely known for its magnificent nature and beautiful landscapes, which have attracted scientists, artists, writers and visitors in a tourism industry that started centuries ago.

The Siljan Ring has long been of interest to geologists and is today a major source of knowledge. The geopark is the narrative voice of the place. In 2019, Siljan Geopark was awarded national geopark status by the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU).
