Description

Malingsbo is located right in the middle of the scenic and very Malingsbo-Kloten nature reserve, 26,000 hectares of unexploited forest land. Therefore much of everything is found in our absolute vicinity; good fishing and kayaking lakes, mushrooms and berries (cloudberries!), hiking trails and secluded forest meres for swimming.

Malingsbo is an old mountain village dating back to the 15th century, with a current population of 60 people. Many are involved in the preservation of the village's cultural environment and the development of visitor activities. Our lively rural community association holds big midsummer parties, the sports association takes care of the dance floor, a few public gardens host farmers’ markets on autumn weekends, and the catering company that offers breakfast and other meals for delivery to our accommodation.

When the ironworks in Malingsbo was closed down at the end of the 19th century, the farm was bought by the government. This cultural heritage was managed by the government until 2018. The manor has been a building monument since 1935, and has always had the strongest level of protection for buildings in Sweden, as it is considered to be of "extremely high cultural-historical value". This has contributed to Malingsbo Manor becoming Sweden's best-preserved Carolingian manor, and very easily confused with, for example, Skogaholm Manor at Skansen in Stockholm, which was partly modeled on Malingsbo.

Besides the manor itself with its two wings, the property contains around ten more houses; the old store, Handlarbostaden, Professorsvillan, Tärdgårdsbostaden, Kornskruven, the archive, etc. Three residential buildings have been carefully and thoughtfully restored and decorated to preserve the feeling of living in a historic environment.

We - Lotta von Schéele and Leif Hernborg - bought Malingsbo manor from the government in 2018, with the goal of returning the property to self-sufficiency. We live in Stockholm with our two children and commute to Malingsbo every week, all year round. Our goal is for Malingsbo manor to once again become a place full of life and activity, where time in no way stands still but where the surroundings are a constant and proud testament to times past. We want to create a place to stay at a destination for learning and recreation, seclusion and celebration.

Directions

To train and bus (weekdays only)
Take the train to Ludvika. From there, buses depart for Malingsbo a few times daily, Monday-Friday. The stop is called Malingsbo bro and is located right next to the manor. Since the transfer time between train and bus is long, you might want to visit, for example, the Dan Andersson Museum, just a few minutes’ walk from Ludvika station, while you wait for the bus.

By train and on foot
Take the train to Fagersta. The works trail runs in stages of 15, 22 and 21 from Fagersta, just over 30 km to Malingsbo. The Naturkartan app features maps and good descriptions of picnic areas and sights along the way. About 10 km from Fagersta (with about 20 km left to Malingsbo) is Lindbostugan rest hostel, where you can spend the night.

By car
From Västerås, north on road 66 towards Sälen. After 26km, turn left onto road 233 towards Skinnskatteberg. After 35km, turn left onto road 68 and immediately right onto road 233 towards Kopparberg. After 13km, turn towards Malingsbo and follow signs for Herrgård Ekomuseum ⌘.
