The school Väggaskolan in Karlshamn was designed by renowned architect Gunnar Asplund following the announcement of an architecture competition in 1912. The oldest building, known as building A, or “the old school”, was built in 1917 and is national romantic in style, inspired by the castles of the past. The building has walls in solid brickwork, plastered on the inside and outside. 20 years later, Gunnar Asplund designed building B, completed in 1937. This building displays all the features of functionalism: simple, clean lines, light, air and a rational look. The two buildings are linked by a corridor building. The exteriors and part of the interior of the original buildings are very well preserved. The extensions added later differ from those designed by Asplund and demonstrate later architectural epochs. Gunnar Asplund was also the man behind the famous courthouse in Sölvesborg and Stockholm’s woodland cemetery Skogskyrkogården. Source: Blekinge County Administrative Board
