Description
A statue made by Axel Olsson that was unveiled in 1959.
The statue is
beautifully situated by the sea and near flower-rich park areas in the southern
part of Karlshamn. The artwork was financed by seven major industries in the
municipality and whose names are engraved on the plinth.
The sculpture of Karl
Oskar and Kristina shows the characters from Vilhelm Moberg's novel "The
Emigrants" and intends to remind of the time when Karlshamn was an
emigration port and many people left their homeland to find a better future in
America.
Karl Oskar looks out to sea towards the new future, while Kristina looks
back at the beloved ones back home that she leaves behind.
On the plinth you
can read Vilhelm Moberg's words: "In the homeland, the adventure of their
emigration has been part of the saga and legend".
A similar statue stands on the other side of the Atlantic in the town of
Lindstrom in Minnesota.
