Description
At about eight in the evening on 27 October 1981, the 76 metre-long Soviet submarine S-363 ran aground at Torhamnaskär. The submarine was unable to extricate itself and the captain went up onto the conning tower. 30–40 metres from the submarine, a small island could be spotted in the autumn darkness. They ran the engines at high revs but nothing helped. The islanders heard the noise but couldn’t see anything. They assumed it was a naval exercise and went to bed.
The submarine remained in Swedish waters until 6 November and caused a diplomatic incident between Sweden and the Soviet Union. It is highly likely that S-137 was carrying nuclear weapons.
