Description

Every spring, grey herons nest at Tummaholmen in the Tromtö nature reserve. In the 1940s as many as 140 pairs nested here but today there are about 40.

Herons leave Sweden in the autumn and can migrate as far as North Africa before returning here when the ice starts to crack.

Herons have a wingspan of up to 175 cm and seeing and hearing them circle over Ivön is an incredible experience. You can see them from the headland in the nature reserve on Tromtö. Tummaholmen is a bird protection area and visitors are prohibited between 1 April and 15 July.
