Description
The church was built and inaugurated in 1885. It replaced the medieval church of the time.
Torhamn is a parish with one church and one minister and just under 1,700 members of the Church of Sweden. The church was built and inaugurated in 1885. It replaced the medieval church of the time. The church building was designed by architect H. Zetterwall. Only a few items from the medieval interior have been preserved in the new church: the pulpit from 1633, the two wooden sculptures of Faith and Hope, probably parts of an older altarpiece, the chandeliers and the altarpiece itself.
The church is best known for artist Gunnar Torhamn’s altar painting, a mural from 1950, which depicts Christ among the farmers and fishermen of the parish. The organ was built by the Hammarberg organ works in 1935 but the front and some pipes are from a Schiörlin organ dating from the late eighteenth century.
