Description
On the seabed in the strait between western Skällö and eastern Skällö, there are remains of a prehistoric pile barrier 290 metres long. At the end of the Viking Age, the strait was blocked off by a large number of piles that prevented ships from sailing there, forcing them to take a detour past Skällenäs. The piles, which are made of oak, beech and birch and have been driven 1-2 metres into the bottom, were investigated by Blekinge Museum in 2023 and dated to around 1050. The area around Sturkö is rich in remains from the Viking Age, in addition to the pile barrier there is a rune stone, two graves, a large buried coin treasure on western Skällö consisting of 313 coins from the 1000s and an ancient castle.
