Nättraby Open-air Road Museum

Communities often grew up where main roads and the water intersected. Nättraby is an example of this. The location is a unique concentration of old and new main roads, railway lines and the navigable Nättrabyån river. The museum comprises 14 existing road environments in the parish of Nättraby. These span paths a thousand years old, and the Via Regia edged with stone walls dating from the seventeenth century, to the cobbled main road of the twentieth century and the E22 motorway. On top of that, there are railways, cycle paths, the Nättrabyån waterway, the road across the ice from Nättraby to Karlskrona, mileposts, Ryttarliden, whose local name reminds us of the riders and horses who climbed this hill, and a two-arch stone bridge. Nättraby local history society and fellow stakeholders therefore created this, the world’s first open-air museum dedicated to the history of roads, ways and paths on land, rail, water and ice.
