Description
The little town, formerly a city, of Kristianopel is framed by an impressive wall that in the early seventeenth century was one of the most modern in Europe. At times in the past, the fortifications were up to nine metres high. Many dramatic moments have played out here over history, especially when Kristianopel was still Danish and was fired on by the Swedish navy. Even today bullets can be seen in the joists in the roof of the church. When Kristianopel lost its town privileges, the walls were also destroyed and used as construction material for the new town of Karlskrona but have since undergone several rounds of restoration. In the 1940s, they were also used by the Swedish armed forces, with built-in bunkers. Today the town wall is three kilometres long and between 2 and 3 metres high, one kilometre of which can be walked around. From the top of the wall, there are fantastic views across Kristianopel and Kalmarsund. Kristianopel Resort is right next door, where you can spend the night and when you get hungry, there’s the popular Café Sött o salt down in the harbour.
