Description

Together with Drottningskär on Aspö, Kungsholm Fortress has watched over the approach to Karlskrona for more than 300 years.

Kungsholm Fortress is still in use as part of Sweden’s defences. The fascinating circular harbour has become something of a symbol of Karlskrona’s status as a World Heritage Site. Exotic plants from all corners of the world flourish inside the protective walls of the fort. They were long brought here by the Navy’s ships as they sailed the globe. There is also a museum on the island reflecting the fortress’ history.

Note that you may not land at Kungsholm Fortress as it is part of Sweden’s defences. However, there are boat trips to the island and guided tours of the fortress can be booked. Contact Karlskrona tourist office for bookings and more information.

Kungsholm Fortress is part of the Naval Port of Karlskrona, inscribed on UNESCO’s list of unmissable World Heritage Sites in 1998.

Read more about the World Heritage Site and find all the places that form part of it in the article about the Naval Port of Karlskrona.
