Description
The bell tower is situated in the quarter north of Carl
Gustaf's church in the center. This detached clock tower was built in the 1790s
from gray stone and brick with stone from the island Öland in the dimensions.
The tower is 36 meters
high and eight-sided with every other side wider, every other narrower. On the
roof is a gilded cross. The tower is divided into several floors with beams.
The drawings of the tower were submitted in 1791 and were made by Thure
Wennberg, an architect, conductor and secretary at the Office of the
Superintendent and amanuens at the Academy of Arts.
The current bell tower
has had a predecessor, located at the same place. It was built in
1760 and was made of wood. It was destroyed in a fire on August 21, 1790, and
soon after that it was decided to build the current stone tower.
Every weekday morning
at 8 a.m and evening at 7 p.m the little bell in the tower rings. In the past,
this was done as a reminder to start or stop fires in the houses.
The tradition of ringing the bell still lives today.
Until 1924, the bells
were run by ringers, now they ring with the help of electric motors.
