Description
Gisslevik wetland covers about 1.2 hectares and is designed so that the river out into the Baltic Sea is passable for fish. Before the wetlands were created, a young alder forest grew in the marshy ground. The stream that runs into the wetlands has a catchment area of 1,170 hectares, 260 hectares of which is arable land. The vegetation absorbs some of the nutrients that the river brings here from the agricultural landscape while some are taken in by grazing animals. It is probable that Gisslevik wetland will be able to remove between 150–300 kg of nitrogen and 15–25 kg phosphorus that comes from the farmland and private drains, which is positive for marine water quality. Generally, a wetland contributes towards richer plant and animal life. This wetland can serve as a “pike nursery” where the young pike get a good start and can then migrate out to sea. Finally, the wetland can also attract rich birdlife. Source: Blekinge Archipelago
