Description

Welcome to visit the Peace Stone in Bröms!

In the middle of the Brömse stream, the Peace of Brömsebro was concluded between Denmark and Sweden on August 13, 1645, and this was the start of Sweden's era of great power. As a result, Sweden received Jämtland, Härjedalen, Gotland, Halland and Ösel from Denmark - and became a much larger country. In addition, the Swedes were granted exemption from customs duties in the Sound.

As early as 1050, the area was the scene of settlements. The Swedish king Edmund met the old Danish king Sven Estridsson in what is known as the Danaholm meeting, where the dividing line between the two kingdoms was set up and marked with six large stones. One of these is said to be a three meter high stone at Bröms, just north of the stream.

The memorial stone stands on an islet in Brömsebäck and was erected during the First World War in 1915 to commemorate the peace of 1645. On the stone we can read the names of the peace lords: Axel Oxenstierna, Corfitz Ulfeldt and the peacemaker de la Thuillerie. Axel Oxenstierna made a considerable fortune from the peace when he was given Södra Möre as his own county by Queen Kristina, which increased his annual income by around fifteen million kronor. Ulfeldt later turned out to be a gambler who had embezzled a fortune from the Danish treasury.

Adjacent to the Peace Stone is a beautiful cycling and hiking trail.
