Description
In memory of A.K.
Fernström and Karlshamn's heyday in the stone industry.
This 100 year old
monument, which consists of eleven different types of granite and weighs 28
tons, is located in the northern part of the city next to the river Mieån.
The city of Karlshamn's era as a leader in the stone industry is forever
associated with one person, Alfred Kofoed Fernström, who came to Karlshamn in
the 19th century and built an empire.
He came from the island Bornholm and
realized early the potential of the Blekinge granite and started A.K.
Fernströms Stenindustrier in Matvik, east of Karlshamn. Eventually he also
quarried stone in Sternö blåberg.
Several famous buildings around the world are clad in Fernström's granite,
including the Empire State Building and the rows of columns along the city hall
in Stockholm.
