Description

The Fragrance Garden was created in 1987 in connection with the restoration of Brunnsparken and Ronneby's 600th anniversary. The garden was designed by Sven-Ingvar Andersson, landscape architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

A total of 600 plants from 50 different species are planted here. The flowering time varies. All are carefully selected for scent and sight throughout the growing season.

According to Sven-Ingvar Andersson, the idea behind the Scent Garden's location is to: "For the walker in Brunnsskogen, a glade in the forest will suddenly appear with a garden whose scent and visual impressions will leave no one untouched."

The fragrance festival starts as early as March. That's when the red-violet flowers of the thistle blossom on bare branches. After that, the garden becomes a perfumery of lily of the valley. In high summer, visitors can poke their noses into the dazzling white lilies of the valley. Or steal a whiff of lavender or mint with your nose. The highlight of autumn is when the silver saxifrage is in bloom and smells of honey.

The scented garden is made up of elliptically shaped concrete pillars. Above these, rough oak branches form a roof. The columns are lined with climbing plants and lush perennials grow on the ground between the paths. A gravel path leads us through the pergola. Paved paths in turn wind across the scented garden, forming transverse structures. In this way, you can freely choose your walk and experience. A striking feature of the design is that the pergola grows in height as the roof falls at a slower rate than the sloping ground.

Several of our common garden plants, such as daylilies, schersmin and wild lilacs, can be found here. But there are also more unusual ones, such as the wild turnip or the anise-scented Spanish chervil.
